Anonymous asked: I just stumbled across your blog, and am very interested in all of it! I've suffered from depression for many years. I also just had my first existential crisis, and that hasn't helped it at all. Everything feels so meaningless. I try to enjoy life and be mindful, but the thought that I will die one day haunts me everyday. I feel so empty. I've looked into meditation, and I'm...

What it means to be a Yogi
Many people think yogis are these inaccessible old dudes who chill on mountain tops and ponder the unponderable. Well some are but not all. A yogi is more than a collection of beliefs and superstitions. They aren’t just another flavor in the cosmic shopping mall.  Powers and meditations do not make a yogi. A yogi is made by a question.  A yogi looks at the universe and sees an unbalanced...

Anonymous asked: Alright, I have a question. I meditate, and I try to do it regularly. But when it comes to your comment about karma and how we react to situations and things, how does meditating help prevent from making negative comments affect us? How is one supposed to react and not take offense while still living life intimately? In my place of work, talk happens, and comments or attitudes are hard to ignore...

Shri Gurudev Mahendranath on the Nath yogis
(photo of my brother nath yogi Hathanath, http://cosmoasis.tumblr.com/) A Nath can do no wrong. This is our spiritual way of life. What a Nath sees fit to do, they do, in private or in public. The only restraint is not to hurt the feelings of lesser-developed people. The Naths are an in-group who are not content to live in the rat race and think as they are told to think and do or not do as...

Namaste
Many of you have heard me say it and many have said it themselves. “Namaste” is a customary greeting in India. It is an intimate way of greeting another person without actually touching them. But it has a deep esoteric meaning.  As it was explained to me by another tantric yogi, namaste means “I recognize the divinity within you and allow you to manifest it.” In this...

The Strength from Breaking Habits
It is a psychological fact that once we adopt a habit or routine, it takes less mental energy to continue that habit or routine than it would to break it. When you think about it, this makes a lot of sense. Adults are nothing but a jumble of habits and routines, evolved over time. Children are blobs of feeling and perspective upon which habits and routines are passed on to.  These habits limit...

Q&A on the Subject of Prayer with my guru...
Questioner: Could You please talk about prayer compared to meditation?
ShivaRudraBalaYogi: In prayer, you consider yourself separate from God, and then pray to God. If prayer gets concentrated, it becomes more effective - because the Ultimate Truth of the mind is God. When we pray, we should pray for everyone, just as in the prayer we recite "Loka Samastaa," we pray that everyone should be in peace and prosperity. If the mind becomes concentrated, it goes inwards, it becomes introverted, and touches the Divine. Thus prayer can be so effective. In the same way, when we meditate, the mind becomes concentrated, and gradually goes inwards and loses all the imaginations of the mind, and merges with the Self. Both are effective and both are the same.
Q: How do you decide which practices to adopt? Sometimes it seems to me that prayer is far more important than meditation and other times it seems that meditation is far more important than prayer. Should you be spontaneous?
SRBY: Everything will be useful. There is really no conflict. When you feel like praying, you pray so that the Divine's Grace might descend on you and a conducive atmosphere will be available so that the inspiration comes. There is no problem. So when you feel like meditating meditate. That's it.
Q: How do you pray? How do you have a personal relationship with God?
SRBY: I pray for peace and happiness of all the worlds. My mind is always at Peace. If you pray, pray for peace for all, then you are also automatically included. Pray "May Thy will prevail, and give us the wisdom so that we can surrender in the proper way that is necessary."
Q: When we pray to God and ask for an answer, for guidance on a particular matter, how do we know how to recognize the answer?
SRBY: The answer will come from within. You have to recognize it coming from within. But if the mind is confused or agitated it won't notice this inspiration from within.

The Power of Non-reaction
One of the greatest things meditation does for you is grant the power of non-reaction. Non-reaction is freedom.  The world controls you through eliciting reactions. If you get a cookie, you react happily. Therefore cookies control you. If someone calls you a bad word, you react with fury. Therefore words control you. If you hate working, your job becomes slavery. Therefore…I think you get...

Zen: Studying Intent (From Dream Conversations)
The method of studying intent is to lay aside all intellectual understanding and emotional assessment and look at a saying or story directly.  Even if you are reading records of ancient sayings or listening to a teacher lecture, if you forget what is on your mind and open up, not producing rationalizations of what you are reading or hearing, this is studying the intent.  I have found this zen...

Meditation Procrastination
Until today, I hadn’t done a full meditation for about a week and a half! The end of college took up all my energy and focus as I strained to sashay through several years worth of intoxication. But back to the meditation.  Let me tell you, I felt how out of practice I was. I cannot stress enough how important a regular meditation practice is. Even if it’s just for ten minutes a day,...

How Buddhism Began
“Are you a god?” they asked. “No.” “An angel?” “No.” “A saint?” “No.” “Then what are you?” Buddha answered, “I am awake.” His answer became his title, for this is what Buddha means. The Sanskrit root budh denotes both to wake up and to know. Buddha, then, means the “Enlightened One”...
