keepingthedoctorsaway asked: How do you find your guru?

haha you know, I asked this very question of my guru when I first met him. So don’t think that you will immediately recognize or click with your guru. It takes light to see the light and sometimes it just isn’t there right away. It definitely wasn’t for me.

I met my guru because he tours throughout the world, though his ashram is in India. He came through NYC and a friend of mine had to all but drag me there. I wasn’t very attracted to him as a Being or very intrigued with his meditation method. I wanted something more mysterious and mystical.

But when I met him, I did know something was different about him. I could tell he was unlike any other human I had previously encountered. And so whenever he came to NYC, I always showed up at his events.

Usually hundreds of people show up at guru events but he is a very low-key kind of guy and only 30-50 people show up at his seminars. So you get to talk to him one on one.

After two years of seeing him over the summers and attending a retreat he held in upstate new york, I saw him over a third summer. I was standing in line to talk to him when suddenly I was struck by the idea of asking him to be my guru.

He was enlightened and accessible; his meditation technique had changed my life. What else was I waiting for? So I asked him if he would be my guru.

He gave me the weirdest look. And then said yes. A year later I ended up staying at his ashram for my junior year spring break.

When I first met him, I had no idea he would end up being my guru and that I would travel halfway around the world to learn and be with him.

So what was it he had told me when I asked how to find your guru?

Pray to the divine. Meditate. Be sincere in your seeking. When you are ready, you will see the guru.

It took me several years of being around the guru before I even realized he was it.

Namaste :)
