Rudraksha - Rudra’s Eyes

In Nepal and India, seeds from certain kinds of trees yield the auspicious rudraksha bead. It is said that after eons of meditation, Lord Shiva opened his eyes and witnessed the ignorant suffering of humanity.

A single tear of compassion fell from his eye and from it grew the rudraksha trees.

Sannyasis and householders, buddhists and hindus, all sorts of spiritual aspirants wear these beads. From them wafts the fragrance of peace and clarity.

Above is the one I usually wear around my neck. It’s about as wide as my thumb. Sometimes I like to study the grooves, marveling at how the folds seem to so closely parallel those of the human brain.

While we in no way need such things to realize the truth of our existence, I enjoy this little affectation as a reminder of grace and tranquility.

Namaste, sangha.
