The Lazy Yogi

True compassion comes from appreciating that the aspiration of others to enjoy happiness and avoid suffering is the same as your own, giving rise to a sympathetic wish that they too be free from suffering.

Being based on reason, such compassion is not affected by whether the other person is a helpful friend or a harmful enemy, or just plain neutral. Real compassion does not depend on whether the other person is nice to you.
